Teaching Science has been a little bit crazy this year. My first year teaching, I was a science teacher. I taught 3 science blocks a day in a 2 day cycle (same material 2 days in a row). I had a regular classroom, but I was at a brand new charter school with boxes of lab supplies that matched my awesome Prentice Hall curriculum. With 80 minute blocks of class, we had lots and lots of time for inquiry based science labs. This year I am teaching my kids for 35 minutes a day. I have a BEAUTIFUL science lab, but very little useful lab supplies and a very very small budget to buy what I need. My “labs” are farther between because of time constraints and I find myself doing more small activities to help students interact with the state curriculum. Teaching rocks and minerals without any actual rock or mineral samples? Really, really difficult.

Sediment charts!

When teaching about sedimentary rocks (which are my favorite type of rocks, incase you were wondering), I actually bought sediments from Michael’s craft store (silt, sand, broken shells and pebbles) and students used magnifying glasses to record information about each and then glued samples of each onto this cute little organizer. PS I have a “lab” I created where students used these supplies and created models of different types of sedimentary rocks. Would anyone be interested if I posted it?
